Reasoning Mind is an education nonprofit with a mission to provide a first-rate math education for every child. The organization designs interactive, online blended learning programs for mathematics that develop students’ higher-order thinking skills, ignite their interest in math, and prepare them for advanced courses like algebra—the “gatekeeper” to college. In addition, Reasoning Mind offers ongoing professional development, training, and in-person support for teachers and administrators using its programs. With Reasoning Mind, students are engaged, teachers are empowered, and technology is leveraged to provide a world-class mathematics education.
Mathematics is important to students’ academic and professional lives—but it goes beyond that. Math develops students’ ability to reason logically, to solve problems, to separate fact from fiction, and to distill ideas to their real essence. Our name is Reasoning Mind because we believe that math education is about the value and beauty of thought. That’s why we love math, and why we work hard to share this love with others.
The organization’s story begins with the Khachatryan family—Alex, his wife Julia, and their son, George—who immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1990, bringing with them only $700 in cash, several boxes of books, and their educational experiences. After settling in Texas, Alex and Julia were able to leverage their strong educational backgrounds in math and science into professional success. Alex led an artificial intelligence lab at Texas A&M University, and Julia used her degree in petroleum engineering to launch a successful energy consulting firm.
As George got older, Alex and Julia found themselves increasingly concerned by his lack of interest in math. He didn’t seem to be developing a conceptual understanding of the subject, and he certainly wasn’t enjoying it. Alex and Julia began studying math education issues more broadly and found that the problem wasn’t isolated to George, or even to a single school or district—math education in the U.S. was beset by challenges, namely inconsistent curricula, low student engagement, and a lack of adequate resources and math training for teachers. Using their expertise in and enthusiasm for mathematics, along with Alex’s knowledge of artificial intelligence, the two created an innovative solution to address these challenges—a web-based program they called Reasoning Mind, which would deliver world-class math curricula and instruction to students in a personalized, engaging way.
Reasoning Mind co-founders Julia, George, and Alex Khachatryan with their family shortly after immigrating to the United States in 1990.
Since its founding in 2000 as an education nonprofit, Reasoning Mind has established itself as one of the highest-quality blended learning organizations for mathematics in the United States, and now serves well over 100,000 students and 2,500 teachers across several states. The organization’s results have been confirmed by multiple independent evaluations from institutions such as Teachers College Columbia University and the Education Research Center at Texas A&M, and reviewed by prominent research entities like SRI Education and WestEd. In addition, the organization has received endorsements from the Academy of Medicine, Engineering & Science of Texas, Change the Equation, The Philanthropy Roundtable, The National Council on Teacher Quality, and several respected mathematicians and academics such as Dr. William Schmidt, Dr. Hung-Hsi Wu, Dr. R. James Milgram, Dr. Maria Klawe, and more. In 2015, Reasoning Mind was announced as the winner of Deloitte’s RightStep Innovation Prize, a national competition designed to identify and help scale the next “cutting edge solution in education.”
Today, Reasoning Mind is focused on continually improving its offerings and reaching as many students and teachers as possible.
(George, by the way, carried on the family tradition, earning an undergraduate, masters, and doctorate degree in pure mathematics.)
