EOG Resources Brings Reasoning Mind to Midland Community

October 12, 2016

Student Blake Pettus enjoys learning math with Reasoning Mind.

Thanks to support from EOG Resources, Reasoning Mind’s math curricula is now being introduced to educators in Midland, Texas.

As one of the country’s largest petroleum and natural gas exploration companies, EOG Resources understands the importance of providing a strong math education to K-12 students. That’s why the company has been a major sponsor of Reasoning Mind’s work since 2012, donating over $600,000 to date.

But EOG’s support hasn’t been limited to cash grants.

Recently, EOG Resources facilitated an introduction of Reasoning Mind to several community educators, donors, and nonprofit and business leaders in Midland, Texas. The community meeting was designed to share information about Reasoning Mind’s programs and results so that local representatives could ask questions and better understand how Reasoning Mind could benefit students and teachers in Midland. As a result of the meeting, two Midland nonprofits decided to implement Reasoning Mind’s math curricula in their summer and after-school programs for over 90 students.

Ezra Yacob, EOG’s Midland Vice President and General Manager, hopes the out-of-school time implementations of Reasoning Mind will provide useful data that local school district administrators and trustees can evaluate: “We believe this summertime program will give them the data they need to make decisions about adding the program to the local school curriculum.”

In addition to funding the summer implementations, EOG Resources also offers free Reasoning Mind subscriptions to Midland employees. One EOG parent, Angela Pettus, has already seen her son, Blake, grow in math thanks to the Reasoning Mind curriculum. According to his mother, Blake initially struggled in math, making mostly Bs and Cs and having low confidence in his abilities. After using Reasoning Mind, however, Blake’s grades and confidence shot up—he earned a 95% average and qualified to take pre-AP math next fall.

“If someone had promised me this kind of result going in, I’d have been very skeptical. But seeing it with my own eyes, I wholeheartedly believe in it,” said Pettus.

The Reasoning Mind team continues to be grateful for our partnership with EOG Resources, which is helping provide a first-rate math education to thousands of students in Texas. For more information on EOG’s support, see this recent feature story in EOG Magazine.
