United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Awards $480,000 Over Three Years to Reasoning Mind

August 10, 2016

The Community Impact Grant will provide Reasoning Mind with three years of funding for its online math implementations in North Texas

DALLAS, TX—Reasoning Mind has been awarded a three-year Community Impact Grant (CIG) from United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, which will provide $161,215 per year through 2019. The funding will allow Reasoning Mind to sustain and expand its online math program implementations in North Texas.

Reasoning Mind’s award falls under United Way’s Education impact area, specifically the math and science strategy, which aims to fund programs that provide students with age-appropriate learning opportunities to encourage better academic performance and understanding in mathematics. This is the third CIG award for Reasoning Mind in the math and science category, having received awards in each of the last two CIG rounds. In total, United Way has pledged just over $1 million to support Reasoning Mind’s work in the community.

Reasoning Mind will utilize the grant monies to continue implementing its interactive, online math programs for elementary students in Dallas County—particularly in Dallas ISD and the Momentous School. Over 30,000 second through fifth-grade students now use the Reasoning Mind Foundations program in Dallas ISD, making it one of the largest blended learning implementations for mathematics anywhere in the state. Analyses each year have shown a correlation between program usage and student growth on assessments such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skill and STAAR. In 2015, Dallas ISD was one of only three major metropolitan districts to show an increase in fourth-grade math scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress—also known as the “Nation’s Report Card. In addition, a recent analysis of student engagement by a Columbia University researcher found that Reasoning Mind is decreasing boredom and off-task behavior and increasing indicators like engaged concentration and delight in Dallas ISD.

“It would be difficult to overstate our gratitude to the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas,” said Alex Khachatryan, co-founder and CEO of Reasoning Mind. “They have been supportive of our work for many years now, and we commend them for their continued commitment to changing lives through strategic investments in high-quality programs. We look forward to another high-impact partnership to increase student enjoyment and achievement in mathematics.”
