News Release: Reasoning Mind’s State Contract Renewed in Texas

March 2, 2016

Funding authorized by the 84th Texas Legislature will allow qualifying public schools to use Reasoning Mind’s award-winning online math program at no cost through 2017.

HOUSTON, TEXAS—For the fourth consecutive biennium, math education nonprofit Reasoning Mind has been awarded funding by the Texas Legislature to deliver its innovative math program to students across the state.

The new contract provides Reasoning Mind with $2 million per year through 2017, which will allow more public schools to implement the organization’s online math courses at no cost. The funding was authorized by the General Appropriations Act of the 84th Texas Legislature, and will be administered as part of the Texas Education Agency’s initiative to improve student achievement in mathematics and prepare students for algebra.

“Once again, state leaders have validated Reasoning Mind’s work and our organization’s ability to improve outcomes for students and teachers,” said Alex Khachatryan, President and CEO of Reasoning Mind. “We look forward to continuing to deliver on these expectations and providing even more Texas students with a first-rate math education.”

The appropriation follows a positive independent evaluation of Reasoning Mind by the Education Research Center at Texas A&M University. The report analyzed results from Reasoning Mind’s 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 state-supported implementations, and found that Reasoning Mind students’ scores on state math assessments and algebra-readiness indicators increased after using the program. In addition, the report found overwhelming program approval by students, teachers, and administrators.

More than 80,000 students in Texas now use Reasoning Mind. Through the renewed TEA contract, all public and open enrollment charter schools serving students in grades 2-7 are eligible to apply for funding to use the program. Priority will be given to schools and districts with higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students compared to the state average, and with STAAR math scores below the state average.

***Update 4/19/2016: Reasoning Mind has reached its maximum capacity for enrolled schools through this opportunity. Thank you to all the districts that applied – we look forward to partnering with you!***
